I love this interpretation. There's always something to find fault with, and it's a great challenge to see the world as it is (rather than as failing to be an idyll) and find gratitude in it. A skill that can carry us so much when times are hard, but makes life more joyous whenever.
Beautiful post, thank you! This strikes me somehow as the heart of... everything. That developing gratitude is a large part of spirituality and resilience. I think the road to true gratitude doesn't always have to be difficult but it can be painful. I like to think it's not all about recognizing what we have but also recognizing, in awe, what truly "is" -- how remarkable our existence is, how vast time and the universe is, and how close we can actually be to G-d. And that it's all in the Torah. Your words have really helped me tonight, thank you.
So glad they were helpful! As you mentioned it's not always easy to do - the road can be painful. As we start a new year I'm reminding myself that awe and gratitude are a choice that we can make. Shana Tova!
